It’s going to be an exciting season! Here we tell you all about the next tennis tournaments to be played in Europe, which are also an excellent opportunity to see these countries.  May 8-21, 2023: Italian Open

One of the three ATP Masters 1000 events played on clay courts, the Internazionali BNL d'Italia (or Italian Open) returns to the Foro Italico sports center in Rome for its 80th annual event. A great opportunity to fly to Italy, enjoy the best of professional tennis and taste the dolce vita! We are especially excited to see: Novak Djokovic, defending champion and No. 1 in the world; Carlos Alcaraz, No. 2 in the world and the new king of clay; and Stefanos Tsitsipas, a finalist at the 2022 tournament. 

Events: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, mixed doubles.
Rules: 2 winning sets with tie-breaker.
2022 Reigning Champions: Novak Djoković (Serbia) and Iga Świątek (Poland).

 May 28-June 11, 2023: Roland Garros Tournament (French Open)

This is the biggest event in professional tennis played on clay. At the French Open Roland-Garros, played on a demanding surface with long rallies, you can often witness historical play. In 2022, Rafael Nadal won his 14th title (and 22nd Grand Slam title), a record that elevated his already legendary status in the tournament and all of tennis. 

Events: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, mixed doubles.
Rules: 3 winning sets with a super tie-break of 10 points in the 5th set (men) and 2 winning sets for the other events.

 July 3-16, 2023 - Wimbledon Championship

Wimbledon is a must for tennis fans. It is not only the oldest tennis tournament in the world, but also the only Grand Slam tournament where players dressed in traditional white play on grass. This means they can play a fast-paced, offensive game that fans love!
 
Events: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, mixed doubles.
Rules: 3 winning sets (men's singles) and 2 winning sets for the other disciplines.
2022 Reigning Champions (singles): Novak Djoković (Serbia) and Elena Rybakina(Kazakhstan).

Did you miss it? Not to worry, European tennis tournaments will be back in the fall. In Paris, from October 30 to November 5, 2023 for the Paris Masters (ATP 1000) and from November 12-19, 2023 in Turin for the last major tournament of the year: the ATP Finals.

Which Documents Do I Need to Attend Tennis Tournaments in Europe?

Are you a citizen of the European Union or Schengen Area (or Associated States)? 
- You can come to France and Italy with a national identity card or passport valid for the duration of your stay. 
- To travel to the United Kingdom and see Wimbledon, you will need a passport that is valid for the duration of your stay. 

Are you a citizen of a country outside the EU and Schengen Area? 

To enter the Schengen Area, which includes Italy and France, you must have a valid passport and, depending on your country of origin, a Schengen visa. See which countries need a Schengen visa here.

 Do You Need a Schengen Visa?

Go to the consulate’s website for the country in the Schengen Area where you wish to travel for the information you need to start your Schengen visa application. Please note: if you wish to visit several countries in the Schengen Area, you must specify this in your Schengen visa application. Once you have obtained your visa, be sure to keep your supporting documents with you, including your proof of insurance covering medical and hospital expenses for a minimum of €30,000. The border police may request them when you enter the Schengen Area. 

 You Don't Need a Schengen Visa?

You can travel within the Schengen Area with a passport issued less than 10 years ago and valid for at least 90 days from your expected return date. 

Please note: depending on the national regulations in the Schengen country you are visiting, you may also be asked for supporting documents when you pass through border patrol on arrival, even if you do not need a visa. For example:  
- accommodation for the duration of your stay
- sufficient financial resources
- return ticket (or proof of financial means to purchase one)
- documents providing details of your profession
- Proof of insurance covering repatriation as well as all medical, hospital and death-related expenses that may be incurred during your stay.

As of November 2023, nationals of visa-exempt countries will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization to enter the Schengen Area.

There are hundreds of professional tennis tournaments throughout the year. These are the most prestigious tournaments, or those with the best players. 

The Grand Slam - 4 major tournaments organized by the International Tennis Federation: theAustralian Open in Melbourne in January (GreenSet), Roland-Garros (French Open) in Paris in May (clay court), Wimbledon in London in July (grass), and theUS Open in New York in August (Laykold). Considered the most difficult to win, these tournaments pit the world's best players, men and women, against each other in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. 

ATP tournaments or the ATP Tour - international men's tennis circuit with 7 categories of tournaments organized by the Association of Tennis Professionals. The most well-known and most prestigious is the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 (or Masters 1000). It includes 9 tournaments from March to November: Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Montreal/Toronto (alternating years), Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris. The ATP Finals, formerly known as the Masters and often considered the 5th Grand Slam, closes each season with a competition between the 8 players that have earned the most ATP points during the season (singles and doubles).  

The WTA tournaments or WTA Tour - international circuit of women's tennis with 3 categories of tournaments organized by the Woman's Tennis Association. The most well-known and most prestigious is the WTA 1000. It includes 9 tournaments: Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Beijing, Doha/Dubai, Rome, Montreal/Toronto, Cincinnati and Wuhan. At the end of the season, the top 8 players of the year also compete in the WTA Finals.
