How to apply: long-stay visa in France
How do I apply for a long-stay Schengen visa for France?
There are several types of visas under the long-stay Schengen visa umbrella (type D) for France: the long-stay visa equivalent to a residence permit (VLS-TS), the long-stay visa with obligation to apply for a residence permit within 2 months of arrival, the working holiday visa, the school-going minor visa and the temporary long-stay visa (VLS-T). These visas are valid for 3–12 months and allow the holder to stay in France as long as the visa is valid.
For each of these Schengen long-stay visas, there is a different application process. They involve different contact people and require different documents depending on the type of visa. In this article, we explain the differences.
Applying for a long-stay visa equivalent to a residence permit (VLS-TS)
Reminder: The long-stay visa equivalent to a residence permit is valid 3–12 months and applies to several categories of foreign nationals: visitors (non-working), students, interns, ICT interns (Intra-Corporate Transfer) and their families, salaried employees on fixed-term contracts and permanent contracts, ICT posted workers, people who want to run a business or work as independent contractors, spouses of French nationals, spouses under family sponsorship, talent passport visa holders and their families.
The advantage? Holders of this visa are exempt from applying for a residence permit during their first year of residency in France.
- You must begin the application process for a French long-stay Schengen visa VLS-TS on the France-Visas website 3 months or less before your planned departure date. The applicant must sign into their account (or create one if necessary) and send in a request for access to the application process and the list of required documents. A passport, long-stay Schengen visa France application form and identity photos are required in addition to the specific documents for a long-stay visa. A spouse of a French national must provide their marriage certificate, for example, while a student must provide their diplomas and proof of accommodation. Confirm your eligibility for a long-stay Schengen visa and the documents you will have to provide with the France-Visas Visa Wizard.
- Required administrative formality upon arrival in France: validate your long-stay visa within three months following your arrival. This procedure is online only using the information on your visa as well as your date of arrival in France, email address and address in France. Finally, you will need a bank card to pay the residence permit tax.
- And afterwards? Two months before the end of the first year of your long-stay Schengen visa equivalent to a residence permit, if you wish to stay in France you may apply for a residence permit that corresponds to your situation.
Applying for a long-stay visa with obligation to apply for a residence permit within 2 months of arrival
Reminder: For foreign nationals that do not have the visa that exempts them from applying for a residence permit mentioned above, there is the long-stay visa with obligation to apply for a residence permit within 2 months of arrival. Once you have filled out your personal information and request, you will have access to the application procedure and list of required documents, which include a passport valid for at least 3 months after the expiration date of your visa and at least 2 blank pages.
